    Strength:

Unless you have a perfect negative, this camera blows film away. I don''t care about numbers, I am talking about results. Stunning 11x14 prints are easy if cropping is done in the camera.

    Weakness:

Bulk, flash exposure problem that many photographers have reported, possible service problems, dust on the ccd. QApparently only some cameras have the exposure problem.

I am very pleased with this camera. First, I thought it was too big and heavy, but I have gotten used to it. I will never use film again. I used about 100 rolls of film per week, so this camera has paid for itself many times over already. I also have a problem with underexposed flash pictures. Other people have commented on this as well. I seem to get the best flash exposue with the camera on "manual." Any suggestions? I have had no service problems, but have had to blow dust off the ccd several times. I am VERY careful when I change lenses, so I don''t know how to stop this problem. I hate that at some point, blowing off the ccd may not be enough and I''ll have to send the camera in for service. As a professional, I guess I really need two bodies. I am looking forward to a new line of lenses for the digital format. I need wider wide angles, and the current lenses must be much bigger than they have to be since they were designed for 35 mm. Overall, very happy. Unbelievable images. Better than film.

    Customer Service

don''t know yet. I did lose one of the caps for the electric connections and was able to get a replacement easily enough.

Very nice. Perfect exposures (as expected from Nikon). The amount of detail captured by this camera is simply amazing - you will need good glass. I haven''t seen any other digital SLR with white balance and color quality. The camera body feels solid - similar to F5.

    Strength:

high resolution solid construction excellent metering accurate color

    Weakness:

Can''t select ISO 1600 with wheel - need to set with custom function buttons.

Excellent image quality. Low noise at high ISOs including up to 1600. The noise characteristics are very fine and film-like - even more so than Canon D30 or D1H. Nikon''s rating of up to ISO 800 is very conservative. The resolution is extremely high, it will make you rethink about some of the cheaper lenses you might have. Solid construction and awesome Nikon auto-metering. Nikon got the color right with this camera. You can select output in sRGB or Adobe RGB colorspaces. Only thing I wished it had is the ability to dial in ISO 1600 without having to press some custom function buttons. (ISO 125-800 can be selected with the wheel). The D1X basically addresses all the problems and complaints about the D1.

    Strength:

Decent image quality; higher pixel count than the original D1; greatly improved internal software of the camera, including the ability to create sets of settings and image albums.

    Weakness:

Exceptionally unreliable and poorly designed computer software (NikonView 4); the "on-off" switch fails to turn off the camera if the software crashes; white, cheap-looking and distracting cover for the LCD display; TTL not very accurate when using two SB-28X (one as a slave)

Weakness of the software bundled with this camera overshadows this otherwise good product. I am lucky to be able to use for critical work my original D1, which uses simpler yet far more reliable software.

    Customer Service

Good, helped resolve software conflict caused by a bundled 3rd party imaging program.

    Strength:

Probably does everything that Nikon says it will do.

    Weakness:

Does not give maximum resultion which the camera is capable of when using JPEG compression and some other formats.

I spoke with Peter Pliteris at Nikon a couple of months ago who told me that the camera was capable of producing a 16.9 megabite RGB file. Unfortunately, this is only true in one type of mode where the file is uncompressed so you can only get 5-6 photos on a 96meg card. Even with a 1 Gig Microdrive, you'd only be looking at 58 photographs per drive. In the JPEG compressed mode which is what most professionals use when on location, the lowest compression rate is 4:1---taking up 2.8 megabites. When you multiply 4x2.8, you get 11.2 megs--so you're only creating an 11.2 meg rgb file, not the 16.9 meg file the camera is capable of. I called Nikon Tech support just to make sure I was reading this correctly in the manual. (Yes, I acutally read the manual before putting a lens on and taking some photographs!) Nikon tech support, both levels one and two assured me that the 11 meg figure was correct.

Anyway, I sold my D1 last month in anticipation of the D!X, which offered twice the resolution--the D1 gave a 7.5 meg rgb file in both jpeg compressed and in uncompressed modes. So, besides me, who does Nikon think they are fooling.

I'm returning the camera to Calumet--they are even paying for the return shipping and being very nice about the whole thing and I suppose I'll pick up a back for my Mamiya 645 system or wait until the next generation of 35s.

If you need something that will use your Nikon system and if an 11 meg file is going to be good enough, It should be fine. Pretty much geared towards the professional user. Given my experience with the D1 and Nikon Scanners, prepare to be listening to muzak alot when you're on hold with Tech Support. On the other hand there are times to call--on the midnight to 8zm shift and on Sundays where the wait times are not long and you get very talkative and mostly helpful support representatives.

    Customer Service

Good, though Nikon has a habit of blaming it on the customer or their computer equipment. Had to send in my D1 and my SB28x flash several times for repairs which at first, Nikon claimed were my fault. In one case, tech support advised me to buy a different firewire conncetion for my computer, but later refunded the price of it to me when they found out it wasn't the problem.

    Strength:

The best digital SLR on the market today. picture quality will make you jump for joy. Accepts all Nikon lenses. Solid body based on F5 and F100. Great upgrade for the D1 users

    Weakness:

    Expensive.
Most of the users have problem with dust on the CCD, which is extremely difficult to clean.
Most of the cameras switch randomly to Japanese menu, and reset camera file counter. Nikon promised a firmware update soon.

Despite original glitches in the camera, this is the best digital camera on the market today. And if you can get your hands on it, you will enjoy every moment of it. Have to give it 5 stars for the value, and only 4 stars for the overall rating, because of the CCD dust problem

    Customer Service

I had problems with the camera that I have recieved from the store. I went to their repair center (1 hour from where I live), and had the camera services. I have recieved nothing but professional service from them. It turned out that camere had some other problems, and they promised to repair it within 1 extra day, and ship it to me overnight. Next day I got a package as promised, and jumped for joy, because inside was a brand new camera. Nikon service was top-nutch!!!

    Strength:

Build quality. Lots of pixels, stunning image quality, colour much improved over D1, image preview is lightning fast, TTL flash with the SB28dx is excellent, menu system a doddle to use.

    Weakness:

This is the camera the D1 should have been. The LCD, while fast, can be difficult to see in sunlight.

The D1x is as easy to use as the D1 and fits easily into ones workflow and Nikon kit. The magenta cast problem on the D1 is gone with the D1x. Skin tones with the x are lovely. The 5.47mp gives stunning enlargements. This time the TTL flash is really accurate with the x and there is no delay when reviewing images on the LCD. Definitely the camera to sway the diehard film people. It could be a bit cheaper.

    Customer Service

Used them once when I had D1. Very fast turnaround and very reliable.

    Strength:

This is one fine camera. The moment I held it in my hand, I thought this could be it for my F5. This really feels like it could replace all film cameras once and for all. Solidly built. Images show at RAW/NEF are stunning, much much better than in JPG mode.

    Weakness:

A tad on the 'big' and heavy side, especially when paired up with the SB28DX.

    As good as it gets.
I really hate the location of the LCD... where your nose gets right up to when you take a photo, resulting in a greasy screen. I keep the protector on all the time, but that totally defeats the purpose of the LCD. why can't they give us a clear protection cover?
But other than this and the size/weight issue, I have no complaint. Perhaps a bit bigger buffer so I can shoot more than 6 NEF continously?
Anyway, image quality is nothing short of stunning. really very very good. I used to scan my negatives using a Kodak RFS3600 scanner, but now I just don't see the need.
