Strength:

Amazing pictures!

Weakness:

A little on the heavy side with the vertical grip, 2 batteries, and an L lens!

I was a little skeptical when I first bought this camera... I deperately wanted control of the entire imaging process (from taking the picture to making the prints), and going digital, for me, was the only way to do so. I was concerned that print quality wouldn't be up to my (very high) standards. But on my second day with the camera I made some 4x6 and 8x10 prints on my friends Epson 777 ink jet ($69.00 printer!!!!) and they're AMAZING!!! They look 3 dimensional! I can't wait to get an Epson 2000p for archival quality. The control this camera gives me over the shooting, editing, and printing process is truly amazing. If you've got the money, go for it. (For the computer un-savvy, it might be a bit of a challenge)

1.6X, telephoto addicts dream
with new sigma 15-30, wildangle problem is solved

Weakness:

There were two times that I am totally shocked after getting the D30. The first is the time when i looked into its pics in my PC after the unsharp mask, I went "Wow!", object is like popping out from the pic.The second time is when I print a 8x10 prints from a epson 870. The quality is stunning! After a few weeks use, all I can say is I am totally enjoying it. Now, I can fool around 799 photos each time, I can try all new styles I never dared to take concerning the photo developing cost. the trial and error makes me improve a lot with all the exposure data. People criticizing the autofocus speed are just nonsense. well, its a bit slow in low light, but overall the auto focus is very fast, at least faster than my N80 and MUCH faster than a Canon Pro90is. I saw people use D30 to track birds flight successfully, what can you say! A lot of people cannot accept digital because they said slides are much better, dynamic range higher, blah blah blah, I think they should buy a D30 and try it and believe it, at 8x10 printouts, I think nothing can beat it.

Strength:

Best photos, digital or otherwise, I have ever taken. Fast. Attached flash is handy in a "pinch".

Virutally noise free to ISO800.
Uses IBM MicroDrives for storage.

Battery life is terrific.

Weakness:

A little bit heavier than my Elan IIE. Wish it were a little cheaper.

I have owned several 35mm SLR type cameras and about 2 dozen digital cameras. The D30 is without question, the best I have ever used personally. The pictures are the most vibrant, realistic, noise free photos I have ever seen. I print up to 11x17 photos on my Epson 1270, and people cannot believe they are all digital. I took side by side photos with the D30 and my Canon Elan IIE. I scanned the IIE negatives into my PC with my Nikon Coolscan IV. Let me tell you, that there is no comparison. The D30 wins hands down.

Camera is very fast for me, but I am not a "pro shooter". A little heavier than I would like, but not unreasonable. Controls are the best of any digital camera I have owned. (The Fuji 6900 comes close in terms of ergonomics.)Some complain about focusing, but I have not had an issue. Low light is not great, but then none of the digital cameras I have owned do very well here.

Canon lens are great and reasonable in terms of price. Their Image Stabalization really does work. I use the 28-135mm IS lens as my everyday lens. I also have a couple of L lens I purchased used. The quality of photos from the L lens is simply "perfection" in my opinion. The color purity and saturation, and detail is hard to believe until to see it and compare to other cameras and lens.

All in all, get one if you can afford it. I have a tendancy to purchase the latest and greatest digital cameras on a regular basis. I suspect I will keep this one for a while! Can't wait to see what Canon comes out with next.....
