Strength:

optical zoom battery charge takes virtually no time no need to install software (therefore any computer can be used to view pictures ) auto features make better than decent pictures manual controls easy to figure out to make even better pictures

Weakness:

LED display scratches easily

I do not understand the delay comments about the delay in shutter exposure after one presses the picture button. As with any autofocus, there is a delay while the camera compensates and locks focus. This problem is easily solved by "pre-focusing" as with a normal 35mm AF SLR camera. Once one remembers that the picture is being burned onto a CDROM and not merely exposing film to light, it is easy to account for the inability to take a fast follow-up shot. Picture quality is crystal clear, I have had no problems with initializing and finalizing the mini disks multiple times to avoid the windows xp support problem. I dropped this camera on top of the Empire State Building in December. Sony support was difficult at best to deal with. Pay us up front, we'll tell you what is wrong with the camera. I used the online customer service form and received the same answer, whatever the problem I indicated. However, camera was returned in as good shape as before. I just wonder what was wrong with it. I only wish that the camera would use the new generation CD re-writable disks. It would save a little $$ to be able to dump some of the junk picture that I inevitably take.

less-than-easy to figure out and even worse if you have a problem not knowing what repairs you pay for

Strength:

CD storage, 10X optical zoom.

Weakness:

Viewfinder, LCD screen, manual focus, batteries, shutter delay, inability to have true exposure control. You don''''t have enough space.

I''''ve read some of the other reviews, and I wonder: Where these people using the same camera I have been? The CD-1000 is a nice idea that falls short of what it could and should be. It has some strengths, but overall, it''''s a disappointment. Not that it''''s a bad camera, but it cheats the buyer. The built-in flash is a great convenience, but it''''s not a good flash. The lens quality is fair, but there is certainly room for improvement. I get clearer pictures with a point-and-shoot. The viewfinder is a nice touch, but it''''s too small. And there is a maddening delay between depressing the shutter and having the picture actually taken. It makes action shots of any type very difficult. The exposure settings are semi-automatic. You can set either the F-stop or the shutter speed, but not both. The camera WILL automatically take care of the other setting for you. Both the viewfinder and the view screen on the back of the camera display at least 2 stops brighter than the picture will look when it''''s downloaded. In other words, if you judge your exposure by the viewfinder, you''''ll have underexposed images. The adjustment for the screen doesn''''t seem to correct this. If you don''''t think that really matters, try it with some night shots; they''''ll all be too dark to be usable, even with editing. And Sony batteries are THE WORST. They are proprietary, VERY expensive, and unreliable. I''''m mad at this camera not for what it is; but for what it could be and isn''''t. Sony tech support isn''''t the worst, but it''''s not the best, either. Consumers issues are not near the top of their list of priorities. The manual focus is next to useless. If you''''re used to a 35-mm SLR manual focus, you''''ll be sorely disappointed in this camera. The auto-focus works O.K., but could be better.
