Strength:
Good looking.Overall, Solidly built feel for point and shoot. Cheap. Sharp Canon lens. Enough Megapixels for decent sized prints. Nearly full manual override available. Wide and useful range of exposure modes. Built in autobracketing.
Weakness:
Battery life is too short and proprietary. Controls are non intuitive and for a point and shoot , somewhat complex: can take some getting used too. Not as easy as say Kodak Easyshare 433 . Not as compact as some other models. Heavy for its size. Green full white balance auto mode doesn't adapt correctly to all light sources. Telephoto side of zoom is slow. The first digital camera I ever owned! Saw it on an online classifieds for the bargain price of $40 so decided, why not: A digital camera that's so cheap there's no reason not to take the plunge. Have used it for people photos and parties where I normally use 35mm compact point and shoots. Strength:
Ease of use, Relatively sturdy build, color settings, fast shutter speed, amazing image qualiy.
Weakness:
terribly undersizezd memory card. lens closure is cheaply done. Would love to be able to have a manual shutter control option for long exposures. 3 seasons with this camera and counting. What a fantastic product. It took a few weeks to get used to the shutter speed and the differences between a digital picture and a film picture. The manual functions are a big plus. The ability to take hundreds of "practice shots" has greatly improved my photography skills. Customer Service no experience Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
See dec 26th. Camera is fine.
Weakness:
Sofware is more than slow. - one picture (aver. 700kb) takes 30 secs. to upload. - it gets slower with each picture added to the database. - it takes ages for the picture database to rebuild. - there is no direct drive access, which some camera's have. Sure, the camera is fine, but the software is frustrating. In addition to my last review: another weakness of the package is the software. It is called Cannon Zoombrowser. But it does not zoom. After one year of usage the programm gets very s l o w. |

Strength:
Size, construction, value.
Weakness:
Flash metering, cannot use AA batteries with it. This is my first purchase in the digital field. I have been very happy and impressed with the features and quality of the S30. It is very well built and I have had no problems with any pieces falling off or coming loose. Construction is bomber. The size makes it very easy to put into a coat pocket and take just about anywhere without being to bulky, weight could be lighter but I wouldnt want to give up one feature for less weight. Good value for features included. I only have two things I would change about it. I would have liked to see the ability to use AA batteries instead of the proprietary rechargeable, and it would have been nice if the flash was a bit wider, less focused and the flash metering was better. I tend to get overexposed images with the flash within 6 feet or so, no help from the flash exposure compensation. I would recommend this camera to anyone. Strength:
- Picture Quality - Easy to Use - Durable & Smart Design - Battery Life - Start up and Picture Speed - Great Auto Mode - Lots of manaul settings - Easy to navigate Menu - Video mode works great - Good software included - Great Flash - A FUN CAMERA!!
Weakness:
- Non yet Excellent camera - extremely easy to use - great picture quality (I am very picky too). The menus are easy to navigate and feature rich! This camera is going to meet the needs of my wife and I both: For me - It has plenty of manual controls to enable me to experiment and be creative. I can adjust white balance, flash intensity, shutter speeds, etc…the camera does more than I can use at this point. For my wife – Easy to use. She can pick the camera up in the Auto mode and “point & shoot” quick pictures of our kids in seconds. There is no shutter delay – she is able to capture the moment accurately (other cameras have a 1-2 second delay from pushing the button to when the picture actually takes…not good with small children) The controls are easy to use and navigate. This camera has as many features as the more expensive SLR style cameras in a durable, convenient size. I recommend this camera to anyone who wants a camera with excellent picture quality, ease of use, convenience, extensive manual settings, and the right price. |

Perused the net for several hours and it is clear that the S30 is the best camera out there for the money. Don''t get that much more for $100 for the S40. Less than one meg on resolution as the S30 is 3.3 and the S40 is 3.8. Wonderful camera, compact and performs flawlessly. Very pleased with the selection. 256 CF Highly recommended |

Strength:
- Well build (all metal) - Additionnal personnal settings (sounds) - Color rendition - Images quality - Lithium Ion battery
Weakness:
- Bad hand handling - Bad flash coverage (good at the center and darker at corners). - Color rendition cooler than the S40 - Smaller body means also smaller buttons The S30 is a clone of the older G1 It is a smaller (slim) version of the G1 for those who are looking for a smaller camera with 3 megapixels. Strength:
Image Quality - low noise, good color rendition, RAW image format, pocket size, rechargeable battery has good life.
Weakness:
Custom Battery - hard to find a spare locally. Like some others, I have been waiting to get into digital until a certain quality/price threshold had been crossed. This camera crosses it. I''ve been calling it my "pocket D30", because the image quality is fantastic. I chose this over the S40 because I saw an anomaly in Canon''s specs. The S30 allows an ISO 800 equavalence, while the S40 stops at 400. This told me that the imaging sensor in the S30 was less subject to noise, and I surmised that this would carry through to the lower ISO''s. Some preliminary testing (white-field/black-field at .4second exposure) shows no visible noise on the white-field test at all. On my black-field tests, I found no visible noise at ISO 50 and 100. A couple of "energetic" pixels started to manifest at ISO 200, but the images were otherwise clean. At ISO 400, I would say there was detectable nose, but i needed to look very closely at 400% to see much of it. Finally, at ISO 800, nose was visible without effort throughout the image, but it was still fairly low level. I have seen cameras that exhibit far more noise at their best settings. In addition, I have not seen any visible noise in actual photos. (Note: I have only had the camera 2 weeks) Control layout is good. While some have expressed concern over the rocker-press controller, I haven''t had any problems with it. It is initially a little confusing becuase it sits where you would expect the zoom control to be on most P&S cameras. Zoom is instead controlled through a small slider on the top front edge, just in front of the shutter button. Menus and displays are quite logical and easy to read.
