Review 1 of 5

Price Paid:  $175.00 from B&H Photo

Summary:

I bought this lens about 4-years ago and never regret the purchase. I normally shoot from about f/5.6-11 and the lens produces the goods. This lens and the 24mm Pentax FA F/2 make a nice travel set of primes! It is compact and relatively inexpensive so it's an excellent lens for travel. The build quility is exactly what I expected for this price range: very good. I know that it's not sealed against weather but I didn't want to pay more $$$ so I can easily live with just very good build quality.

Strengths:

Sharp & very contrasty. No problems with flare at all. Focusing accurate is very fast. Light weight and compact. F/1.7 allows in a lot of light. No noticable distortion.

Weaknesses:

None. The focusing is slightly noisey but Pentax doesn't offer silent-focusing and I already knew this -- so this isn't a weakness. By not offering the silent wave focusing the price remains low giving this an excellent price/performance ratio.

Similar Products Used:

Pentax 24mm f/2; Canon 20mm f/2.8 USM, Canon 24mm TS; Sigma 17-35mm zoom, Voightlander 12mm & 15mm.

Review 2 of 5

Price Paid:  $140.00 from B&H

Summary:

A great, cheap prime for available-light photography. If I had to do it again, though, I'd go for the 1.4 at $40 more. Not that I'd often need 1.4 over 1.7, but the more light in the viewfinder the better.

Strengths:

sharp, light-weight, fast AF

Weaknesses:

Focus ring is a bit slim and is more loose in one direction than the other, but still smooth and tight enough

Review 3 of 5

Summary:

An excellent standard lens none should be without. Great when shooting in low light, or when used with polarizers.
Good price! (but the slightly more expensive FA 50 f/1.4 might offer better speed for the money)

Strengths:

* Excellent sharpness
* Excellent contrast and colours
* Good build quality
* Compact size
* Flare under good control
* Fast AF
* Rubberized focusing ring with good grip

Weaknesses:

* Manual focusing ring a bit small.

Similar Products Used:

Pentax A50 f/2, M40 f/2.8 "pancake".

Price Paid:  $90.00 from Henry's Photo Toronto

Summary:

Great in low light, fast AF, sharp, very few lenses are as sharp as a 50mm lens and none as fast or as good in low light. Must have if you shoot in available light.

Strengths:

Nice build, sturdy, sharp and contrasty

Weaknesses:

none

Very sharp, fast prime lens, that is good for low light photography.
