Summary:

I purchased one hoping for the best but I was disappointed. Here are the positives:Small (same size as original Palmcam) Includes removable flash module Uses two included AA rechargeables, one hour or so use Can use AA alkalines, less than half hour use Optical viewfinder LCD preview, LCD review Uses removable compact flash cards Uses JPG format Has LCD thumbnail display Zoom display like Casios Has AC adapter/charger with video out, serial out Relative fast picture record (several seconds) Has 640x480 maximum resolutionHere are the negatives (IMHO):Lots of color noise at normal house room lighting Flash sensor seems to catch too much peripheral flash thus poorly exposing center of picture (my Kodak DC-25 flash works MUCH better) Poor low light performance without flash Highest quality 640x480 pics compressed to about 70-80K (normal on RDC-300) Lens protector easily smudgedThe setting for the poor flash was a karate demonstration at our church. The flash illuminated the church pews in front of me and UNDERexposed the platform area about 20 feet in front of me. Without using the flash, the same shots were properly exposed, but were subject to blurring. This one went back to Sharper Image as not up to snuff.IMHO, if the low light capability were improved (less color noise) and the flash sensor were adjusted for center priority, this would be a keeper. In comparison, I purchased a Ricoh RDC-300 as a gift for a relative. It has great low-light capability as well as a good flash. The pics are very good for 640x480. The lens and LCD are well-protected when the camera is not being used.Regards, Robert

Summary:

This is the second digital camera that I've owned, the first was a Kodak DC20 - BIG disappointment! I presently use a Panasonic PalCam (II). I use the camera primarily for my web site photos and e-mail photos. I also use it for composition test shots (Why waste film?) when shooting 35mm. The images are fairly crisp and color reproduction is good. The sucessor to the original PalmCam is available now (1/98) and is an excellent choice for a full featured "shirt-pocket" digital camera. Features: - built in LCD (can be turned off) - detachable flash (w/ internal battery) - 10X digital zoom and macro mode - 2 AA or rechargable Ni-Cads (included) - 2 Mbyte flash memory card (included) + 24 "FINE" photo capacity + 85 "NORMAL" or "ZOOM" photo capacity + selective image delete All of the "periphery" stuff (power supply, battery charger, serial interface, NTSC slide-show video out) are packed into the nifty docking station (tripod mount threads would have been a nice addition). I purchased an 8 Mbyte flash card w/PCMCIA adapter (96 "FINE" / 340 "NORMAL" capacity) and the Ni-Cad charge lasts for 100+ photos. In addition to a tripod mount the camera could use a self-timer and a "snap-on" telephoto lens option. I recommend purchasing additional flash cards from a computer store. I purchased the 8 Mbyte card w/ adapter for less than $100. Panasonic wanted $200+.
