Price Paid:  $90.00 from Sears

Summary:

Find another camera! Don't waste your money on this one.

Strengths:

I have an 80S.

Weaknesses:

First few rolls were weak so I switched to 800 speed film. Also delay between actually hitting the button and the photo taking. Never used the panaromic view.

It worked fine for about a year and then just went dead!

Similar Products Used:

many other point and shoot cameras

Customer Service:

Haven't called since I had the camera for over one year

Review 2 of 6

Summary:

I bought one of these, loved it, and bought another a few weeks later for my kids. After a few months one of the two cameras stopped working (wouldn't zoom or focus) and it took two tries and 4 months to get it back repaired. A few months after the warranties were up we had another major failure - don't know if it was the same camera that was already repaired once or its mate. Didn't think it was worth $85 (maybe more) to repair a $120 camera - so it's in the junk drawer now. It's a real pity - the pictures that it DID take were quite good.

Strengths:

Pleasant to use. Very good picture quality for the price.

Weaknesses:

Delicate, unreliable.

Similar Products Used:

Mainly use SLRs but have used and owned point-and-shoot cameras from Minolta and Pentax

Customer Service:

Poor. Waited 8 weeks for Olympus to return the camera and they hadn't fixed it. After another 8 weeks it came back repaired.

Model Reviewed:
Accura Zoom 80S

Summary:

I have ordered a new camera. The red-eye flash prevents me from getting any good pictures of my baby.

Strengths:

Easy to use, takes lithium or AA batteries

Weaknesses:

Red eye reduction is a long series of flashes rather than one pre-flash. This is too distracting to get decent photos of young kids or babies! Adults should be instructed to hold pose until the real flash fires.

Similar Products Used:

Minolta Freedom Zoom (no problems)

Customer Service:

none needed yet

Review 4 of 6

Model Reviewed:
Accura Zoom 80S

Summary:

I love Olympus cameras in general, and the Accura 80 is a very nice instrument. While it's not supersharp, supersmall, or fast-lensed (like the Stylus Epic) it's a very good camera of its type.

Strengths:

My wife has an Accura Zoom 80 - not the 80S, but no doubt very similar. It is a capable zoom p&s, and has produced excellent images under a wide variety of situations. And you can use two AA batteries OR a Lithium cell - a nice convenience.

Weaknesses:

Two things I don't like:

The press-the-button-to-actual-firing delay is VERY long. I'm used to manual cameras, and my ability to capture the decisive moment is severely hampered with this camera. Even when I try to compensate by estimating the delay and aiming "forward" of where something is, I still miss. (And with the red-eye reduction flash, the syndrome is far worse.) Truth be told, most P&S zooms are like this.

Close focus when zoomed in to 80mm is iffy. Attempts at closeups of flowers and such often come out totally out of focus, despite the focus lamp indicating that the distance is okay.

And generally: as you would expect, the zoom lens is NOT as sharp as a fixed lens, and it's so bloody slow (f/4.5 to f/9) that fast film and frequent flash are pretty much a given.

Similar Products Used:

assorted P&S cameras going back to the first Nikon One Touch (a GREAT camera!)

Customer Service:

While still under warranty, I had a problem and sent the camera back. They couldn't find anything wrong, but it came back quickly and has been working fine ever since.

Model Reviewed:
Accura Zoom 80S

Summary:

The price of the camera may be low, but the quality is not worth the price. I am also having difficulity returning the camera.

Strengths:

None

Weaknesses:

The camera has motor functions which cause the camera to not work at the most inopportune moments.

None
