Price Paid:  $499.00 from ?

Summary:

This is my 4th Olympus C-series digital, over the past 4 years, so I know these cameras very well. It is a great point & shoot digital camera for novice to intermediate use, and without a doubt, the best for the money (this applies to the C3000 and up). Very good image quality, good photographic flexibility, and ease of use. If you are searching for a digital camera under $450,this should be it.

Strengths:

Very good image qualty, easy to use, Great value for the money, excellent optics, fast lens (f1.8!) compact design, you can take pictures completely automated, just point and shoot, or go manual if you want. Flash is the best in this category of cameras.

Weaknesses:

There is no automatic lens cover when turned off, so the lens can be scratched if not careful. If you use an optional wide angle or telephoto lens attachment, you must use the lcd screen to focus, and the flash isn't located far enough above the attached lens, so images have a dark round shadow in the corner of the pictures. The lcd screen is easily scratched, if not careful. This camera does not take abuse well (as if any other camera does?). Drop it on a hard surfac and it's probably in the shop. If the zoom lens gets whacked, it's going in the shop.

Similar Products Used:

Olympus C3000, Nikon 35mm FE2, Many other 35mm, medium & large format cameras.

Customer Service:

Good. Had to call them too often, although many times due to something i broke on the camera (it doesn't take a beating). They are easy to access and helpful. Have had 4 cameras repaired; 3 times receive it back within 7 days of when they receive it from me. Once 30 days after they received it. Website gives repair updates.

Price Paid:  $799.00

Summary:

This camara is awesome! When I bought it, it was a bit pricey, but it delivered much more that I was expecting. The quality of the pics doesn't compare to any other camara that I've seen. Today, Olympus has placed on the market a 5 Megapixels! I can only wonder how much better this pics will be!! The features and the easy of use to make the camara do what you want and not let the camara do what it wants is the best of all!!!! Easy, quick and nice. Only a bit bulky........

Strengths:

Easy controls Quick and precise Lots of good features Manual controls are the best and easy to work with Very nice to hold. It is made for the hand

Weaknesses:

bulky If you need it to be on very quick because something is coming up in the next three seconds....... forget about it. It takes around 4 to be ready.....

Review 3 of 23

Price Paid:  $799.00 from Circuit City

Summary:

We spent a lot of time researching digital cameras before we decided on the 3040, and we haven''t been disappointed yet! Color is captured beautifully - photos enlarged to 8 x 10 look just as good as our 3 x 5''s. We''ve been learning how to adjust settings manually to get the look we want (in certain instances), and the results have been fantastic.

Strengths:

Great picture quality - Lots of features - lightweight - nice lcd viewing screen - accepts separately-purchased telephoto and wide-angle lenses - flash intensity level can be varied (which comes in handy) - easy to discard (erase) pictures you don''t want to keep - easy transfer of pics to PC

Weaknesses:

Takes a while to learn how to use many of the camera''s features.

Have had no need to contact Customer Service (knock on wood) :-)

Review 4 of 23

Price Paid:  $599.00 from J & R

Summary:

I''ve had this camera for one week and I love it. Takes great shots, feels great in your hands and has great features. It''s taken me a week just to read the helpful instruction book and try most of the features at least once. I tried the rapid shooting feature at a baseball game and took pictures that made me feel like a pro.

Strengths:

The bright F1.8 lens is amazing -- take pictures indoors in very little light. Great features and lots of fun playing with them -- but since the Auto mode serves most purposes, the manual mode becomes a.) a way to take a variety of bad pictures, b.) a toy to grow into or c.) something most useful to someone already trained on serious manual cameras. But if a beginner like me wants a camera with advanced features, this is an easy one to use.

Weaknesses:

Okay, I read these reviews before I bought this camera. And everything people write about the lens cap is true. Poorly thought through. Did they forget this in the spec until the camera was already designed? The cap even comes off with mild side pressure. Otherwise a perfect camera.

Review 5 of 23

Price Paid:  $599.00

Summary:

I could afford pretty much anything up to about 1000 dollars and finally went with the C-3040 after a fair amount of researh (though I''m sure I missed things). I went with the 3040 over the 4040 because I don''t print out anyting bigger then 8x10 which is the same quality between the two. I do loose the better zoom but just wasn''t worth the 200 dollar difference to me. What I really think you need to understand is that a digital is not a film type camera. Though technology has taken it a long way, they are not yet the same for the end user. It is a must to read the book and to understand that pictures are captured differently. Most of the neg comments I read are that expectations were not met. I have found this camera great so far. The most amazing thing to me is the low light performance which brings up a point. Although it can be used as a point and shoot, you will get poor outcomes more often then a point & shoot film camera unless you adjust the camera. I have turned off the flast for almost all indoor pictures in almost all light levels but really dark with great results. When I do use the flast it is the delayed mode which will also give good results. A film camera is much more forgiving but the 3040 is much more fun. I would recommend this camera to anyone who has the desire to learn and practice a bit. Other cameras are easier to use but cover fewer situations well. This camera can be made to perform well almost under any situation but with a few key strokes. I did not find it difficult to use. You are safe with this camera but I think for anyone going digital, you have to take the differences into account or you won''t be happy. Picture quality is excellent. Hope this helps.
