Price Paid:  $0.00

Summary:

Wow, this lens has an outstanding optics. Extremely sharp at wide open. Probably the sharpest lens I''ve ever used. Has great minimum focusing distance, I''m able to fully frame a golden crowned sparrow without any ext tube. AFS works great, locks into subject very quickly.

Strengths:

It''s pretty light and small for a 500/f4 lens. Sharp optics.

Weaknesses:

None

Review 2 of 3

Model Reviewed:
AF500mm f/4D ED-IF AF-S Nikkor

Summary:

My favorite lens. I use it for everything from small birds to large mammals and it's rugged enough that I trust putting it into my backpack on tough hikes. If you're serious about wildlife or sports photography this lens would be hard to beat.

Strengths:

Remarkably sharp and excellent contrast compared to other lenses at any focal length. Fast focus even with 1.4x teleconverter and sharpness is excellent even with 2x. Lighter than both 600 f4 and 400f2.8, it is a great compromise on length and weight.

Weaknesses:

Only complaint is the lens hood. It is very long. The two piece hood with the 600 f4 is more convenient.

Similar Products Used:

Sigma 500 f4.5, Nikon 300 f4.

Customer Service:

Never needed.

Review 3 of 3

Model Reviewed:
AF500mm f/4D ED-IF AF-S Nikkor

Summary:

A bit pricey but in line with other manufacturers. This is a great lens--I love working with it.

Strengths:

Fast,razor-sharp lens. It is GREAT for fast action sports such as football.soccer, and baseball.

Weaknesses:

My only complaint with this lens is the size of its lenshood( it is huge). I would prefer a hood that was a little less ungainly. It is,however, VERY light weight.

Similar Products Used:

AF-S 300mm,AF-S 80-200mm both sweet.

Customer Service:

No problems.
