Nikon 100mm f/2.8

MSRP: $

Description: Here is a good lens for general photography such as head-and-shoulder portraits, travel and others. Somehow, the Nikon 100mm f/2.8 E series lens fills the vacuum on the lower price range at this focal length. It is targeted at the users who may be conscious with budget spending but still like to enjoy to use Nikon optic in their photography.

Summary:
This lens is a big surprise. I got this as a "hood" with my F90X. At the first time i looked through it, was something to fall in love with easy and the first shots were exactly the same. This lens has beautiful bokeh, very good sharpness even widely opened and good color saturation. My one is the second version with the metal ring, but appears to be single coated, as it reflect violet colors from its front lens. Stopping down to F4 and sharpness is perfect, contrast superb. Keep away direct light from this lens, use hood and an MC filter. Color is a bit warm, but really not disturbing, i like this tone for human faces. Focussing ring is very smooth and precise, the lens itself is very well built.
Series E was Nikon's first cheapo line-up. If any of todays low-cost Nikkors would turn out such performance with such rock solid and lasting build, i would be very happy... I got mine as a thrown-down one and now its one of my favourite. If You encounter one: Give it a try!

Strengths:
Bokeh
Sharpness
Build quality

Weaknesses:
Single-coated, contrast fallls down as direct sunlight emerges.
