Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $0.00 from FujiHunt, UK

Model Reviewed:
7600 Ultrachrome

Summary:

Epson's latest and greatest "medium" format printer. Print quality with the new Ultrachrome inks is of "photo" quality at all sizes, and at around half the price of the older generation 7000 series, it is excellent value. With a max print width of 24", this printer should go big enough for most purposes. Buy the 9600 if you need 44" print width. It is easy to forget that until Epson came along with their 7000/9000 printers, wide format inkjet printers cost a small fortune. Epson should be given credit for changing the pricing convention for large format printers, and for making them even more affordable with the 7600/9600 series. But a printer is pretty useless without accurate color profiles. Bill Atkinson has made available some professional quality profiles for use with the standard printer driver, and these are downloadable from the Epson US site. They are strongly recommended to get the best from this versatile printer (unless you brew your own profiles using a spectrophotometer, that is, and even then, the Atkinson profiles could well prove to be better). Downsides are some "bronzing" on glossy papers, and a hint of residual metamerism.

Strengths:

Print quality on both matte and glossy paper, with a choice of "black" inks depending on paper choice. Photo quality, good saturation and color gamut. No real competition at the price point.

Weaknesses:

slight metamerism and bronzing.
