Sony Carl Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 35mm Zoom

Sony Carl Zeiss 24-70mm f2.8 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

High-performance Carl Zeis large-aperture zoom. The SAL-2470Z Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar f2.8 24-70mm Zoom Lens is a brilliant all-around performer—with SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) design for fast, silent auto-focus, pro-quality Carl Zeiss T* coated optics to reduce lens flare, and 17-element design with two aspherical and two ED glass lens elements to minimize distortion and virtually eliminate chromatic aberration. It also benefits from the Super SteadyShot image stabilization built into every Sony a system DSLR—and its wide-angle to medium telephoto range and compact, lightweight design is ideal for a wide range of shooting applications (35mm equivalent: 36-105mm).

Strength:

Heavy and expensive.

Out of focus in all corners with all focal length. Especially at wide-angle are.

Removed from use. No more Carl Zeiss lenses. No use in photography, do not buy.

Strength:

Sharpness throughout all focal range. Color rendition deep and natural. No regret in buying it. It increases the quality of the camera I use which is a Sony A700.

Weakness:

None.

A lot of buyers of cameras ignore the fact that a good lens makes the camera produce better looking pictures without chasing for more pixels. This lens will surprise you with beautiful pictures and worth the price.

Strength:

Sharp and fast, build quality, out of camera colors, contrast and sharpness that all but eliminates post processing.

Weakness:

HEAVY

This lens is heavy and expensive but the Carl Zeiss shines. It is sharp at all focal lengths and apertures across the board. You could probably could make a windshield with the glass in it and have enough left over for a mirror or two. It weighs two pounds but is worth carrying every ounce for the image quality. The colors, sharpness and contrast are amazing. You probably could get the same result from another high end lens with some Lightroom seat time but it's nice to nail an out of camera shot without any post processing. When I shoot landscapes I don't mind carrying a heavy camera. It's going to be on a tripod anyway. I use this with my Sony Alpha a850 and grip. It's quite the handfull. Maybe not recommended if you are going to carry a camera all day. But for shooting a specific landscape and short carry time, image quality is so stunning it's worth it. The a850 and Carl Zeiss 24-70mm combo is a match hard to beat. I am sure the Nikon D3 could probably beat it but not by much. With this lens, if you expose and compose the shot properly in the field you have all but eliminated any need for post processing. The only other lenses I have used that would give this lens a run for its money are the Carl Zeiss 16-80mm and the Olympus 12-60mm. But this lens beat both of those.
