Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L USM 35mm Primes

Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L USM 35mm Primes

DESCRIPTION

This ultra-wide-angle lens has the shortest focal length in the L-series. Element 2 is an aspherical lens to correct distortion. Other aberrations such as astigmatism are also corrected, resulting in ideal image quality. The lens has a fixed, petal-type hood and a gelatin filter holder at the rear.

Strength:

Well built, infintity setting is correct. Very sharp, decent flare characteristics at night (comparable to my Canon 50mm 1.4). Fast enough for dusk aerial shots. Acceptable sharpness wide open.

Weakness:

Probably too expensive for most people to have in their kit, highly convex front element is unprotected and vulnerable to finger prints, etc.

Compared to the Canon 15mm and the 17-35 L lenses, the 14mm is spectacular. The manual focus works correctly and the lense really has amazing sharpness (even to the edges) for its focal length. While it costs a lot, the rental price on it is pretty reasonable for the edge it can give you, especially if you're stuck with a 10D or D60. Well worth the difference in money between it and the 15mm. Put it on a 1DS or 35mm and it's really awesome.

Customer Service

For this lense, no experience. For other lenses, disappointing at best.

Strength:

14mm well built f2.8

Weakness:

Lacks sharpness As sharp or less sharp than canon wide zoom costly

I bought this lens because of my initial disappointment with the 16-35L lens. To me this lens was more disappointing. It costs more than the zoom and if you compare sharpness-- the zoom is at least as good as not better. The 14mm is heavy, good color reproduction but not as sharp as I would have like to have seen. I was using this with my EOS 1D and there may have been some issues with front focusing with this lens but not my others. I was so unhappy with it i returned it after my inital tests.

Strength:

ULTRA wide angle with
strait lines.

Weakness:

Pricy.

Since this is a rare ultra wide angle in it´s class I haven´t tried anytihing comparable, really.
But it was a true pleasure too use this one !
Some distortion at the edges but thats a must when
dealing with this kind of extrem lens.
The barrel-and pincustion distortion was nothing that bothered me.
I´m impressed that Canon has engineers able to make such lenses like this in particular!

If you have the possibility to borrow the lens for
a day or so, just go-on and do it !

This is the lens for people who needs extrem widangle such as architecture photographers and
documentary photographers aswell.

Customer Service

Strength:

Sharp (for a lens of this focal length), low spherical aberration (straight lines do not bow outward), built beautifully (up to Canon’s usual exquisite “L” standards), relatively small and lightweight. Very high status factor: This lens will make all your Canon-owner friends green with envy!

Weakness:

Chromatic aberration (color fringing) is a problem at all apertures.

If you're a Canon EOS user this is the one you have to have, unless you really feel comfortable putting a Sigma or Tamron on your camera--which would be like putting Wal-Mart retreads on your Ferrari. (If you can afford this baby, you probably have a 1 or at least a 3.) The chromatic aberration--this lens' only real flaw--can be corrected digitally with a neat program called Picture Window Pro 3.0, so if you're going that route, it's basically a non-issue. Still, it's very pricey and, for that money, one would think that it would be better corrected.
