Strength:
-Amazing saturation
Weakness:
-there are no weaknesses in this FILM. The only weekness is the PEOPLE who clearly use the wrong film for the wrong situation. If you want a decent all-round film why not go for reala or astia for portraits. This is a great film. I first read the reviews from this site and then saw some examples and knew i wold get the boost in saturation that i was looking for. This is great for landscapes and most macro photography - which is what, if you do your research, its designed for.

Weakness:
None that I can think of Here's the problem: You just ran out of Velvia. You're in a small Midwestern town of 10,000 with only a Walgreens and a Wal-Mart in sight. And you need a highly-saturated, inexpensive, readily avaiable slide film. Kodak Elite Chrome Extra Color to the rescue! It's pro-quality film (based on the Kodak Professional E100VS emulsion) that's available almost everywhere-including your neighborhood Walgreens. And wow, what a film it is! It's got very bright colors, a nice warm tone, a convienient ISO 100 speed, and good sharpness, too. Even if you're a pro, don't pass this film up-you just might need it someday. Or maybe you won't. Strength:
True, lifelike, eye catching colors 100 speed - perfect for landscapes Good contrast-shadow detail
Weakness:
Expensive Hard to find For all those people who complain about poor skin tone - this is not a portrait film! It's more saturated than other films because it's made to capture the vast array of colors in nature, not the limited pastels of a human face. The colors are extremely vivid while keeping true to life across the whole spectrum. It accurately renders nature without the cartoonish greens of Velvia or the cold, blue cast of Provia. I have been shooting it for years and would almost rather leave my camera at home rather than shoot any other film. This is the single best landscape film available, period! Strength:
Strong saturation and contrast. Sharp. Good exposure latitude. Less expensive than its professional counterpart, E100VS. Great for landscapes, architecture, nature, etc.
Weakness:
Caucasion skin tones come out red/ruddy. Not a good choice for portraits of caucasions. As the name implies, Elite Chrome Extra Color has more saturated color than original Elite Chrome. It also has more contrast, which can often give the illusion of increased saturation. With an RMS of 11, it doesn't have the finest grain compared to other ISO 100 slide films available today, but it is still finer than older films such as Kodachrome. It is very sharp and should yield good enlargements. Customer Service n/a Similar Products Used: Elite Chrome 100, Elite Chrome 200 |

-Not too over saturated -Nice hint of a warm tone -Fine grain
Weakness:
None that I can think of right now. I love this film. I got to try it free throught a coupon in a photography magazine. At first, I wasn't all that crazy about trying it, because I generally don't like saturated films. I was pleasantly surprized. This film is saturated, but it has a slight warm tone to it, it's not too overdone. You do have to watch what you shoot with it, this won't be a good portrait film, but would be a great fall foilage film. I just got some slides back from a Tractor graveyard, hundreds of old tractors with colorful prairie plants growing amongst them. This film really brought out the vibrant colors of the old tractors and all the prairie plants as well. I think of this as my "Outside, sunny summer day" film. Use it for the right purpose and it will reward you well. Try to bracket exposures in 1/3 to 1/2 stops around your metered exposure for more/less intense colors. Strength:
- Beautiful colour & saturation - E6 processing (Bah to Kodachrome) - ISO 100 - Good for blues - Consumer grade so less affected by conditions - Half the price of Velvia
Weakness:
- Availability - in Australia its hard to get, even at Kodak Express stores (who only have a limited range of Elite Chrome 100 slide film) Most of my photography is underwater, with some landscape stuff (mostly of coastal scenes). With these types of photography, saturated colours are important, as is the emphasis of rich blue tones. Previously I had experimented with Velvia, but mainly for macro work. For wide angle stuff I used E100VS or more commonly Sensia 100. The ISO 40-50 rating of Velvia is too big a trade off for wide angle stuff. As I go to a lot of remote locations (in Australia and overseas), I cannot ensure refrigeration of films, so I actually prefer consumer grade films. Hence I was pleased when Kodak launched Elite Chrome 100 Extra Colour (EC100EC). EC100EC has wonderful saturation and a good tendancy towards blues. Its ISO 100 rating is suitable for most wide angle and macro work. It is my film of choice for these options. The other film in my bag is Sensia 400 which I use for wreck and low light shots. As most underwater photography uses strobe (flash) lighting, natural light photography is mainly for large animals that are silhouetted or fast moving. not for genera purpose Someone shoud stop complainig about extra saturation, if its name is extra colour what do you expect? I love this slide been using it for landscape, I took amazing pictures of medieval casle here in Italy, and I'm actually making a book out of it. It reproduces tones of the stones greatly and it's a bit warm. It's almost similar to ektachrome 100 vs but half the price, I don t know why nobody complains about ektachrome saturation . I used it with Canon l lenses 28/70 f2,8 and 70-200 f4, it s the perfect slide for those lenses in landscape. Strength:
High saturation, most nebulae are on the red side, so this film gets you more nebulae.
Weakness:
Blue is too weak, so getting both color for Trifid Nebula is not easy. Great for astrophotography. The color of stars and nebulae just pop out of the slide. Fine gains, pushed 2 stop and still acceptable. Only wish they have a 400 Extra Color film, which would be great for astrophotographers. |

Strength:
Contrast Saturation Price Use it for the right purpose and you wont be disappointed.
Weakness:
Some blues come out wrong I agree with the below posters that this is an underrated film that's being unjustly bashed. Yes, it has bad points but the merits outweigh them. That is, if you can come to terms this isn't exactly meant for portraiture. It's highly saturated which makes it more appropriate for nature, landscape, floral or travel shots and immediately comparable to Fuji's velvia which is twice the price and a stop slower. It's only a consumer film and I'm more than surprised when you compare it to other films in that range. For the same price, you get sensia which lacks any punch but would be better for skin tones in portraits. The reds, greens and yellows come out great . Yes, this film is slightly on the warm side (fine by me but obviously not for others) and if I have a quip, its only that SOME shades of blue tend to turn out as lavender. |

Strength:
Great colour saturation Extra stop over Velvia
Weakness:
None, if used for the purpose it was designed for I used this film exclusively on a dive trip in April. The colours are amazing. I used to use Velvia for macro and either 100VS or Provia for wide angle, no need. This film will cover the gamut. The extra saturation it delivers is beautiful for underwater images as it adds an extra Oomph to the shot. If you want to take portraits of people then use the right film, like Astia, stop complaining, this film wasn't designed for it. It's like complaining my SUV can't race in the Indy 500.
