    Strength:

    Build quality!!!!!!!!
Excellent results from only 2.7 mega pixels

    Weakness:

    Camera weighs a ton
The batteries aren't the greatest, maybe a couple hundred shots from a charge

Even though this camera is old it is still a useful machine. This camera takes pics fast, and doesn't bog down. The 2.7 mega pixels may not be the latest technology but they still produce pics that are as good or better than a 10 mega pixel compact. This thing is built like a tank and will probably last for many more years.

    Strength:

"Pro" Nikon, familiar to anyone who's used a Nikon DSLR in the past 10 years, fast auto focus, etc.

Records in raw (NEF) and Jpeg formats.

5FPS frame rate up to 40 frames.

Can meter with manual focus lenses, although it's not matrix metering so sometimes it will be a little off.

General sturdy build and reliability, rated for up to 150,000 frames but see below.

Pretty much a digital version of an F5, noise in images is better than contemporaries like the D100 but worse than newer cameras like the D50.

    Weakness:

The camera uses NIMH batteries that can have an unpredictable and often short life. The charger is also expensive ($100+). I'm trying a $35 DS Miller charger to see if I can get around that. Lithium-ion conversions have been done but basically involve hacking up the battery and inserting a custom tray for two 3.7v cells, not for the faint of heart.

The resolution of 2.74 Megapixels, still perfectly fine for the web and small prints, but not much use if you crop.

The exif files do not record the frame count so short of sending it to a Nikon Service Center you''ll never know how much life is left in it, just use it until it dies.

White balance is not always reliable on auto and the camera has trouble with mixed lighting sources (tungsten and daylight, etc.) However I also saw this behavior in the D2H.

Limited to 2GB compact flash cards, which is plenty big. The limitation may be due to the FAT16 file format but I'd need to check for sure.

The D1H was pretty much a product improved D1, offering a higher frame rate and some image quality improvements. Namely it records in the Adobe sRGB color space as opposed to the rather odd choice of NTSC for the D1. However, the D1's low resolution is retained, and while the camera can "get the job done" that and the battery system count against it.

Quite great in itself, I took it for a spin the first time on a project a friend of mine and I had, about a drug rehab facility and the people that go in and out of it every morning. Truly dazzling experience, it worked like an angel and the project turned out excellent. I completely recommend it for outdoors photography.

    Strength:

Cheap.Better than my D50 and D100 - Sharper and I like the accurate results I can get with my SB 600 flash. surprisingly, as it only has DTTL technology. The focusing is lightning fast and high ISO shots show minimal grain. With 2 new cheap independent batteries from EBay the camera can take over a 1000 pictures. Great quality with class glass like my Nikon 17-55mm and Nikkor Non AFS 80-200mm f2.8D Two touch which I have. You don't need AFS as the internal motor is so fast with loads of torque.

Amazing quality for a 2.7 megapixel camera.

    Weakness:

Heavy. No lithium batteries and the cells must be regularly recharged.Automatic White Balance needs manually adjusting as it just doesn't work if left to itself!

Strong, reliable, low price and ultra fast operation and handling. Great camera for any kind of people function or sports where you need to capture the exact moment , either a facial expression or sports movement. Great color straight out of the camera which requires minimal post processing.A great way to go to enter the pro sector of the market at a bargain price.

    Strength:

FAAAST !! fast ,fast AF...and strong and precise and steady,,and weathersealed...and ...and-....its super PRO...even today!!
and make very sharp sharp files..

    Weakness:

    a little heavy...! outdated design

This machine still works wonders ! The Nikon D 1 H maybe is an old design but dont let this fool you, this machine has made the front page of Sports Illustrated ,dont u forget that.!

Even today lot of PROS use this Nikon especially in the 3 world.
    Well,what happenthe last 12 months??:::>>Heres my experiences ..

So ,i bought another one; a used sample and have not regret it at all.
Actually its raving fast and this summer i had a chance to lend a Nikon D2 X and was able to compare the two machines..i did found it easier in some ways s to work with the new d2x BUT i found the files more sharp better and easyer right from the box with the old D1H !...i preferred the old D1H and saved the money and bought some new glasses; Nikkor 17-55 and the 70-200 VR!
Well, lateer this summer at a soccer game i tried the Canon 1 D mk 2 N and compared the speed and actionspeed from both cameras and found that the margin of course was in favor of the Canon BUT only by a little! actually you can shoot up to 40 jpegs and more than 23 raws in 5 shots per second its very close to the canon 1 which is 48/ 27 raws and super fast 8 shots/sec,well the King is the Canon but i decided to save the money for one more season as i see no reason to shift as my edtor seems to be glad fort he files this >old>machine produce and i try not to be a camera snob. Why buy new and be in depth when you can be happy with the existing?i saved lot of dollars by doing so and furthermore i discovered that the new batteries you get on the market is better than the originals and a lot cheaper and last forever! with two new design OEM batteries it can last for an assignment for a whole day!
The NIKON D1 H certainly still rules and is the Queen of sports ;PJ action assignments and general work even if you worj in RAW format...! its a pro machineAnother benefit >It is so strong so i now know i can use as a hammer!!*LOL*

    Strength:

FAST FAST FAST...right color...super AF..strong ...and and....just right..for the PRO PJ...and you could go on... and its cheaper (used )compared to anything else!!? wauw.

    Weakness:

none--battery perhaps?? buy two or 3 xtra

The Nikon D 1 H camera is a full time Pro camera in any regards and full of the potential it can give a photographer who need a camera in the state of art class. As a (normal)Canon user i was hesitant to try Nikon, but another photographer and now a dealer for a respected store convinced me at once. As a full time PJ im very critical of my work and equipment. I tried many types and machines; but this one, even it was used and (old) gave me the feeling of having a PRO picture making machine in the high end class. So far im very impressed also of the AF speed,i forget all about USM and HSM and all tha snack and just shoot away with any lenses whether they are from Nikon or another brand. Also the ISO at high settings is formidable even compared to new DSLRs !. My editor was recently so impressed of a series of pics taken with the little cheapie Nikkor 50 mm 1,8 that he almost cried of the sharpness, colours and files it produced;right out of the box using no PS.(some others made with a Phoenix 19-35 was also very impressive too)...so... For newspapers the> small> Pixel amount is enough and we are all happy! This is a great machine, and i consider to buy one more D1 H ..(or maybe the new d200?) NIKON ; You are great!

    Strength:

AF- fast & responsive Picture Quality- Straight out of the camera I like these shots more than my D70 Heavy- Its a strong build, was made to take a beating (if necessary)

    Weakness:

The little door covering the flash sync connector keeps coming open. Thats about all the problems I got with it!

After using the D1 for about a year, and realizing I needed a better pro camera for fast sports I started looking around for another camera. The D70 I have is awsome, but the fps weren't as fast as I wanted. After shopping around for a while I found a D1h on ebay with a bunch of accessories for less than $1000. I jumped on it and haven't regretted it since. Being a college student I couldn't afford to get a D2h or D2x. I tend to use this camera more than I do my D70. AF is awsome, picture quality out of the camera is great, and the menus are easy to get through and understand. Being able to use the high ISO (around 800-1600) is a HUGE improvement over the D1. I brought the camera to shoot a hockey game, and while shooting at ISO 1600 I could see very little if any noise. The battery lasts much longer on the D1h than it does on my D1.

    Strength:

Fast and Reliable. Look and Feel of the F5. Metering system awesome. Battery last about 500-600 shots in Fine mode!

    Weakness:

Images a little on the cool side in auto mode. NO TTL with SB-28 or 24 Buttons to manipulate screens at bottom a pain. Wish they had full screen like the F5 and F4. Do not like the 1.5 factor for lenses.

I just bought the camera because where I live now there are no labs to print my work. I was hesitant to say the least but now after using this camera I am just amazed at the speed and clarity! I have been shooting at 400ISO and I am very impressed. I am just about ready to sell my F5 and F4 to pick up another D1H or the X body! This camera is truly amazing.

    Strength:

ISO RANGE 200-1600, can push film speed with camera and also with software TTL Flash works Aperture ring works F5 feel Strong Fast Excellent battery consumption

    Weakness:

Maybe a slot for two CF units, only has one. Remember to but a protective cover by Hoodman for the rear LCD

I previously used the Kodak 620x, which i paid $6000 for, loved it but was aware of its limitations which are too many to post on this review of a D1H. I was able to sell it for $2600 after one year. I went and bought this D1H and couldnt be more pleased. Nikon picked up on all the areas that Kodak seemed to have forgotten. I do a lot of low light long exposure photography and the D1H excels. I love the various shooting modes, jpeg, 12-bit raw tiff. The graphical custom settings menu finally makes it easy to use customes setttings. The camera has for the ability to shoot in color and b+w. Amazing details on the 2000X1300 1 mb fine jpeg. Printed a 18X12 and could never tell that it was taken with a digital camera. I love viewing the pictures instantly on the clear LCD. Best thing is if you do flash photography the TTL works. I cant say that about many SLR Digitals. Nikon has proven that its an innovator and cares about their customers by putting so much thought into making such a user friendly and complete product.

    Strength:

    Speed, color, and write speed.

    Weakness:

    None that I can see

I just got this in time for the annual Thanksgiving Day football game. WOW, what a treat. I am putting the D1 on Ebay this week! The write time is incredible, the buffer size is a joy, and the colors out of the camera need little work. I did some indoor soccer events this weekend and the 800 ISO is actually usable! I used a D1 for about 14 months. The D1 was great, but this is even better!

    Customer Service

On the D1 it was great. We''ll hope we dont have to find out on the D1H
