functions are not complete clear without a hand book

My first cannon was an Av1 which I loved like a brother it was such a good camera I had travelled extensively and it was always ready and always reliable
if you paid attention to the light and adjusted you could shoot that thing anywhere and get a shot with something there
I didnt lknow how this new one would keep up even though in my heart I was
slightly anticipating the new technoligy as good thing
I was already realizing new gear means more batteries
I didnt regularily have access to resupply and it needed to be durable and the AV1
had been that
I could nt aford to be left withour a camera
how would I like learning the skills of this new one with the busy life working and running along I had recently purchased on the base in Edmonton where I was stationed

So I broke the AV1 and the 630 EOS became the camera of the day everyday
and I was forced to learn its moves and eventually love it for its reliablity and durable workings under a somewhat fragile appearance
I have had this camera flooded frozen and dust blown nearly to death as I travelled the world doing the miltiary jpbs
and it still takes great pictures even now years later in 2010

feel, weight, reliable, workhorse camera, battery lasts a long long time. Awesome bright light (like Indigo from Timex, but way before Timex had it) that glows. big bright viewfinder

battery gets zapped in cold weather easily (0 degrees C or colder). If you're looking for something light in weight.

I have had this camera since it was brand new in the early '90s. This is a true workhorse of a camera. Most cameras today are delicate, but this has that nice heavy professional feel because of all the metal used in the body. It helps steady the shot. Very solid, built like a tank. If you're a believer of the old day cameras and that they are better than anything on the market in recent years, then this is one of those cameras you like. Even the frames per second rivals pro-level cameras today. It has everything you need, and nothing you don't. If you need those portrait, landscape modes on cameras today, then this is too "advance" of a camera for you. But if you know your stuff, even the basics, you will turn out awesome shots. Excellent light meter.

- Cheap! You can find one on ebay or KEH for roughly $100.00 - Built quality is really superb, the size and weight makes it a really stable camera to hold. It feels like you are holding a professional camera. - AF speed is superior to the Rebels I own. Although you will find a problem on subjects with no vertical line, but point it on a face and it will be able to focus really fast. - Continious shooting of 5 fps is a real BONUS!

The only thing that I dislike about this camera is that there is no exposure scale and metering in Manual Mode is a real pain. But it doesn't affect me that much since I normally use the P mode and use the M mode when doing flash photography. I wish that there was an option for an vertical grip

I used to have an EOS 1000F (Rebel S) and an EOS 500N (Rebel G). When I recently started shooting events, parties, shows, I lost alot of shots because the Rebels cannot focus fast enough specially in low light and when the subject is moving. I sold one of my rebel and while window shopping for a replacement, I caught upon an EOS630 in excellent condition. I went back home to do some research on the Internet and the next day and went back to the shop and tested it. Surely, it looks like an ugly beast but was so nice to hold. It fits my hands quite well, comparing to my rebels which I find really small. I like the weight too, it helps me get a firm grip of the camera. After a short bargaining, I brought it home. A few days later, I shot a wedding with it and all I can say is this camera is AWESOME! The AF speed is definitely faster than the Rebels and it let me take a shot when I want it. This will definitely be a keeper.

AF is extremely quick. Used 630s are still a wonderful investment.

Used this camera for four years as a military photojournalist. Held up in the middle east, Alaska and performed duty perfectly. Got beaten up and thrown around and didn't affect performance. A great camera overall.

a little heavy (but I'll take the sturdiness of full metal design any day), some people may think no built-in flash is a weakness, spend the money and get a speedlite, I have the 540, you'll see why built in flashes are pointless. so...I guess NO WEAKNESSES ;-)

So many great things have already been said so I won't reiterate what's already been expressed. For my experience though, this is a great, solid piece of equipment. I've taken it in to some crazy conditions from the heigh of heat and humidity of a Hong Kong summer, to the frigid depths of a Beijing winter, to INSANE college parties, this work horse doesn't miss a beat. It's got all the functions you REALLY need. With time you will be able to master the simple settings and be capable to do anyting the newer cameras do. I've talked to some people online, looking for accessories for this camera...everyone who has ever owned one wishes they had it back. If you find one, buy it! Do not pass go...yadda yadda yadda.

Plenty of features,durable, well built, you could probably drop it a couple of times without doing to much damage! The camera is very predictable, you basically know what you will get every time.

No pc terminal!!!(BOOOOO)

I bought this little puppy "as is" in the pawn shop. The battery was dead. I ran home and got a battery that I knew would fit, and presto, $60 with not tax! I have used the same camera a few years back and have had absolutely no trouble at all with it. I have owned a Nikon N90 and the Canon has been an equal partner as far as picture taking. I like the multiple exposure setting. When I bought the N90 it claimed to have multi-exposure, but they did not tell you that you have to purchase the data back in order to achieve it. My main gripe with the 630 is it has no external flash capabilities! I had to buy a hot shoe attachment with a pc terminal in order to use the camera with strobes. I don''t know what Canon was thinking about when they left that out! Aside from that, the camera has been a gem. What do want for $60? By todays standard it might be lacking a bit, but 12+ years, what do you expect!! I would highly recommend this puppy if you can find it, you won''t regret it.

height, weight, (lage body size), the manuals printed by Canon for this series are a joke, there is part 1 which for most people tells you nothing much, part 2 is harder to get and details the better features. Some sellers of manuals don''t mention this, obviously intending you to get suckered in to buying the parts seperately, this is a major failure on the part of Canon - unneeded as neither part is large, should have been done as a single item!

I have EOS 600 version - great, rugged, sturdy, dependable camera with fantastic spread of features to allow program and manual use. While AF may be 10+y old, still very workable and accurate. Bought 2nd hand, 1m later after only 2 rolls of film, went on a 3m world voyage, relied on it. It never let me down from bouncing around in a backpack, on planes, buses hire cars. It may be a bit heavy for constant carrying, but then the weight also gives a boost in hand held low light stability. Very pleased with well thought out exposure metering and ease of adjusting settings. Mostly used on auto rather than prgm, as this gives most flexibility to jump in and out of exp control. Basically intuitive to use. My 1st AF SLR and I''m hooked on it. Only 2 lenses canon 28mm and 24-85mm, very pleased with results from both.

fast, simple

very painful manual control

I bought this because of its 5fps built-in motor. I found this camera very easy to use, you press a button to activate AE lock and switch from matrix metering to spot. AF is better than F4s.

Although it's painful to use manual mode as only info you can't adjust aperture and shutter at same time, I knew EOS was going to surpass Nikon AF, and it did.

Mine exausted power in minutes when 8 years old, otherwise it's a great camera- OK, not so much fun using it, you just compose and shoot, generates so many nice photos, I believe Leica M6 is more fun to use.
