Strength:

its interchangeable focusing screens, very useful handgrip, 120 degree buttery smooth throw, double exposure button doubling as rewind release... need I go on and on?? It was simply the best SLR ever made, at least from a user-perspective (Canon, Nikon, and Leica owners will have you think otherwise, due to nothing more than millions of dollars spent on clever and ubiquitous marketing from these companies). The Nikon N4004 is an interesting camera when considering it’s unique history. In the mid-1980’s the “do everything “ pocket cameras were all the rage, so Nikon decided to go after that market when they introduced the Nikon 4004 in 1987. Now, we all know that the 4004 is not a pocket camera but many of it’s features were based on the pocket camera idea. This new Nikon features the AM200 module which contained 200 CCD’s. When compared to its predecessor the Nikon N2020 which only had 96 CCD’s, that’s a pretty impressive achievement for the time period. Now as far as the way the camera’s dials are laid out and how they function is quite different from previous Nikon's. The f/stop is selected by the dial on the body and not the dial on the aperture ring. When you mount your lens it must be set to its minimum f stop and left there. The shutter speed ranges from 1 – 2000 seconds. The aperture dial has a range from f/1.2 to f/32. The camera has A for aperture priority and S for shutter priority, B for bulb and there is an L for lock. In the autofocus and autoexposure modes if the camera can not focus on the chosen subject, the exposure is not correct or if any of the two combinations occur, the camera will not fire. This is an automatic fail safe function Nikon added to this camera. To continue shooting you need to figure out what went wrong and correct it. LOL! Yes, this can be a hassle. All in all the camera will perform to your skill level and achieve fantastic results as long as you are a fantastic photographer. The key is knowledge. The more you know about your craft the easier it is to shoot with anything including a pinhole camera. These cameras sell dirt cheap in the digital age.You can land a clean usable body in the mid thirty range, if your lucky like i was, you may find one with two D lenses for 20.00. Now that's a bargain. This camera received some slight upgrades in 1989 and was renamed the N4004s

Weakness:

Come on, what's a weakness? If you shoot with confidence, there are no weaknesses.

Strength:

Typical Nikon build quality, even though it's largely plastic it has a sturdy heft and feel.

Works with manual or AF-S lenses.

Built in speedlight flash (also a first).

Only needs 4 AA batteries.

3 segment metering.......well, it was notable for the time.

Weakness:

For a beginner camera it has a unique and unintuitive layout using a "Decision Master System" that is basically a shutter and aperture dial under a plastic cover. You can set it manually or leave it on automatic, but if you do you get no feedback what shutter speed/aperture it's using, just lighted +/- symbols in the viewfinder. Even the "On" switch has an interlock that is a little hard to figure out.

Generally sluggish autoocus performance, which was also typical for the time.

No advanced controls such as exposure compensation or priority modes.

This was I think about 1986 Nikon's first prosumer oriented autofocus camera; the original being an expensive F3 variation from 1983. It's an SLR and fairly basic, but if it's all you need then it'll get the job done.

I've had this camera for 22 years! I went digital 10 years ago and hadn't touched it since then. I picked it up last week and began to play with it and guess what? It worked perfectly - even more amazing, the battery had a good charge and it began firing immediately! I was SO astounded that I had to write this review. Completely stunned me and if it hadn't happened to me personally, I never would have believed it.

A battery holding a charge for 10+ years?? That's something.

DOF Preview would be nice

Very nice camera if you keep in mind what you're getting. I got mine with a bunch of lenses I wanted for my N90s. The lenses more than made up for what I paid, so the 4004s was pretty much free. All in all, I spent $60 on it to fix the film door latch, which seemed like a mistake at the time. After putting a few rolls of film through it, I couldn't have been more wrong . I prefer to use the manual focus because the AF isn't that great, but I've got no complaints. No, it doesn't have the bells and whitles that more expensive bodies have, but for the price that doesn't matter. Its a great camera for hiting the streets or going anywhere you wouldn't want to take a more expensive camera. Its not overly tough or flashy, but if you are looking for something that'll get the job done and won't break the bank you've found it. All it needs is a little love and you'll be fine.
