the 35mm f/2 or wider AIS versions are a WHOLE LOT CHEAPER, and most of your clients would never know the difference probably. Again, because it's really a specialized low light lens, (like my review of the 200mm f/2 AIS) I would rate this a 4 overall if not for the build and optical qualities of this lense.

Again, another specialized available light lense with supurb optics. I have no complaints whatsoever with this lense. The build is professional, auto focus is quick, and although heavy it is handholdable at slow shutter speeds. I've never been much of a wide angle shooter so all of my comments should be taken with that in mind.

This is one of the best lens I've ever used! the framing with the speed is marvelous. I can easily use it with Provia 400F within the MTR train and have excellent image even though the train is moving fast! the color reproduction is better than I expected and don't quite understand the comment about color bias problem.

This is a great lens. I am able to use Velvia slide film, hand hold this lens to 1/8th of a second in very low light, wide open and still get a great shot. I have found this lens to be a wonderful combination with my 85 1.4 AFD. I really dont understand the comments about not having good color. I have compaired the slides wide open to my friends Leica 35 1.4 and find the Nikon every bit as good.

price too high, could just bought a leica lens, not wide enough.

Color is not good, film specific, not good for Kodak Gold film, and check-the-box processing on Fuji Reala is very yellow-orange. Slides need color corrective filter, tend to faver orange color on the basic brown spectrum. Only thing good is the close focusing, great for night photography, otherwise just buy the 28mm 2.8 D. Price does not justify quality results, unless shooting B+W, then the angle is not wide enough. Profit motive, not compareble to Leica, whom ever said that was just a joke.

If this lens were AF-S, it would approach perfection as a small format lens.

This is truly an execptional lens for the simple reason that it is fast & sharp at all apertures. Comparing images using a Fuji S2 from 28/1.4 at f/2.8 & f/8 versus the Nikkor 17-35/2.8 AF-S, the 28/1.4 is clearly sharper at f/2.8 than the 17-35 at f/2.8. At f/8, the two lenses are very close to equal. However, the 28/1.4 is also about as sharp at f/1.4 as at f/2.8 or f/8 for that matter. This is invaluable in indoor action photography because I can shoot at f/1.4 & still crop aggressively from D1H images and obtain an exhibitable image. Other prime Nikkors (20/2.8D, 50/1.8, 35/1.4 AIS, 85/1.8D, & 135/2D) are all subject to reduced clarity at maximum aperture. My 400/3.5 AIS is comparable to the 28/1.4D in that it is essentially as clear at f/3.5 as at f/8. The 28/1.4 is reasonably compact, fast to autofocus, and not extraordinarily heavy, for the service it performs. Yes, it was a $1300 lens (reconditioned), but for what the lens does, I believe that it was worth it.

This is one freaking sharp lens, from all apertures. Metal construction. Short focus throw. F1.4!!

Huge (72mm filters) and heavy (1.14 lb). Balanced fine on my F100 but when I went "back to basics" with FM2N, it was like handling an Indycar on a frozen lake. Recommended hood is useless.

Huge, heavy, and very expensive. Excellent performer.

amazing lens for low light/ street photography! this lens has unbelievable sharpness and color rendition when shot wide open! set it to f1.4 and shoot whatever you like, any time... i enjoy street photography and the view of a 50mm/1.4 is simply too narrow, with this wide angle you can shoot at REALLY low speed! also f1.4 gives you great control of DOF, which is generally not available among wide lenses... it''s not heavy at all compare to the pro zooms, get it if you know you''ll need it!

This lens has a hand-made glass aspherical element, which is the reason for its cost. This is different than most other aspherics offered today (which are glass/plastic mouldings). Lens produces a smooth tonality in images not seen in most Nikon lenses. Similar to Leica-M lenses. Quite sharp, even wide open. Worth the price.
